The eggs are pipping!

Ducklings have a beak tooth which is a small point on the top of their beaks. They use this to break the shell.

When they are going to hatch they first break a small hole in the shell. This is called pipping. There is then a pause in progress while they absorb the last of the yolk.

They then ‘zip’ the egg, turning in the shell until they crack it all the way round and can hatch.

‘Pip’ to ‘Zip’ is normally 12-48 hours but the longest we have had was 54 hours.

So far we have Yr7, Yr8, Yr12 and the staff egg all pipped…..
